Today we would have had a watery theme. Our sponsors, the FalRiver company, generously run a boat trip around the Fal estuary for us every year. This year we would have explored our estuary and rivers on board the Moyana. A wonderful commentary would have pointed out local sites, the history and wildlife of each place we passed. This trip would have been another great opportunity to see parts of the shoreline which are inaccessible by land. In the evening, Andy Day MBE and the Portscatho Coastguard Rescue Team would have given us a brief history of the modern-day coastguards and would have shown us some of their techniques.
Tomorrow, Friday 8 May, is a special Bank Holiday to celebrate the 75th Anniversary of VE Day. We had planned a talk from well-known local author, Philip Marsden, would was to talk to us about his latest book, The Summer Isles. This wonderful book is about mythical islands and Philip’s single-handed sail from Cornwall up the west coasts of Ireland and Scotland. Many of us will know Philip’s book, Rising Ground, about the Roseland; hear him talk about it here. In the evening, we would have joined our friends from the Roseland Centre for their fundraiser at the Gerrans Parish Memorial Hall. This would have been a marvellous evening including a full 1940s meal, dancing and music from the All Star Belles. Everyone was encouraged to come in 1940s outfits.
