Day 1 – Saturday 22 April
King Harry Dawn Chorus
100 musicians from the St Keverne Brass Band and the Three Spires, accompanied by musicians and singers from the community, will gather at the KHF to perform a Dawn Chorus. The event showcases new musical work written for brass instruments and voices by Cornish composer Gareth Churcher of the Cornwall Music Service Trust. Local watercraft are invited to form a flotilla led by the Fal River ferries fleet at the end of the chorus.
Parking: For guests from the Roseland side, please park on the approach road to the ferry for pickup at 07.50 by KHF.
For the Feock side of the river, there is free parking at NT Trelissick.

A Milliner’s Tale
Meet Holly, The Girl in the Yellow Dress
Fashion found me at an early age. When I was eight years old, the mother of a friend taught me how to sew and my first foray into the world of fashion was to cast off the school pinafore dress and custom craft my own buttercup yellow creation. I was lucky enough to have a very open-minded teacher who turned a blind eye to uniform rules and allowed me to wear it. That was the start of a lifelong love affair with fashion.
I went on to study Costume Design at the London College of Fashion. Then in the second year, I discovered millinery and to be honest, it was love at first make. My head had been well and truly been turned and I found myself working in the English National Opera millinery department, doing my internship making headdresses for Madame Butterfly. At that moment I knew that I wanted to be a milliner for the rest of my life.
It was years before I began working for me, during which time I learnt my craft alongside some of the best in the business including Justin Smith, Philip Treacy and Jane Taylor. I ended up starting out like so many others, from my bedroom. These days I work from a beautiful space, nestled in the pretty idyllic village of Veryan where all of the houses are postcard-perfect. It’s just a petite studio, close to the sea where I can feel inspired and create beautiful things.
My work is fun and colourful, embodying an effortless elegance that is simple yet stylish. I borrow something from every era in time from the twenties decadence and thirties glamour to the fun of the fifties and sixties chic. My designs encompass each era and combined with my distinctive style, make each piece truly timeless.
When you strip back the glitz, the glamour, the sequins (and hours of stitching) behind what I do, you’ll find I’m still that girl in the yellow dress, the
girl that never lost her sense of fun and stayed true to her first love, fashion.

Mevagissey Male Choir
This innovative male choir will be celebrating its 50th anniversary next year. Its popular and constantly updated mix of modern and traditional material has delighted audiences at more than 1,100 concerts over the years in Europe, Canada, the USA and throughout the UK.
Since its formation by a handful of local men in 1974, Mevagissey Male Choir has raised, and continues to raise, many thousands of pounds for charities and good causes. Today the choir has approaching 50 singing members, including three generations of one family and two of another. Over the past 25 years, under recently retired Musical Director Graham Willcocks, it has developed an eclectic repertoire which has proved to be particularly appealing and which is expected to be enhanced under new MD Jimmy Cannon and talented accompanist Matthew Fox.

Dolls were never on the menu for Kelly as a child, rather she would be found knee-deep in paper and PVA glue. A day trip to a craft fair with her mother at thirteen saw Kelly returning home with glitter, card and rubber stamps and she’s continued to weave her own special brand of magic ever since.

Veryan Gardens
Crugsillick Manor is a 17-18th century house. The garden has been re-landscaped and planted over the last 14 years by the current owners. The structure of the garden has started to mature with sweeping yew hedges defining the lawns and broad areas of mixed planting. Distinct areas have been planted to take advantage of slopes and aspect. There is a woodland bank, best in Spring, a Mediterranean bank with aromatic and flowering shrubs, a hot garden that peaks in August – October, a rose border and a silver border as well as a large pond and many new tree and shrub plantings. Plant diversity is key to the design with over 1000 species and varieties ensuring all year round interest.
Trist House and garden was built by Samuel Trist vicar of Veryan in the 1830’s. The garden is a traditional English garden and has extensive woodland with exotic trees and shrubs. There is a rockery which drops down to a pond. In the front of the house there are a series of Italianate terraces, perennial borders, lawns and shrub borders.
The ticket price includes entry to both gardens. There are two tickets on sale: the first is to visit the Manor followed by Trist House; the second ticket is for a visit first to Trist House and then to the Manor.

Parking: there will be parking available nearby at Crugsillick Manor – look out for signs. Trist House has some parking for people with a disability. Otherwise, please park in Veryan Village (e.g. on-street parking, alongside Veryan Village Hall, the social club, the church etc and walk up to the house).

Curgurrell Gerrans Bay – Crab Lunch
Situated on the idyllic Curgurrell Farm, enjoy an alfresco lunch of fresh Gerrans Bay Crab with homemade salads and local bread, accompanied by a glass of Bosue Sparkling wine.
Curgurrell Farm Shop is a family-run business, that opened in 1998 with the aim of selling the fresh fish and shellfish caught by the Taffinder family. It has grown over the years, and we now include other local fishermen’s catches. The shop also sells garden produce grown by friends and neighbours to supplement all that is grown here on the farm. We stock local wines and beers, as well as our homemade drinks and preserves made from our own lemons and limes and locally grown fruit. Home-reared meat and homemade frozen meals are just a few more items that fill the shop.
Now run increasingly by Robyn and her helpers, we are always happy to talk to our customers about their requirements and help in any way we can.

Jacka Jazz Entertains with Friends
The Roseland-based jazz quintet, led by Mike Hitchings on Saxes, play foot-tapping mainstream swing and tunes from the great American Songbook, sung by Zena Smith.
In 2000 Jacka Jazz started in Portloe as a trio with Mike Hitchings, soprano sax, Gerald Morse, In 2000 Jacka Jazz started in Portloe as a trio with Mike Hitchings, soprano sax, Gerald Morse, tenor sax and Ceryl Humphries, keyboards. The following year they contributed to a very successful recording in aid of the Sunrise appeal. When Ceryl left to direct local choirs, the band became a quintet with Roger Miners, keyboards, Ray Blee, drums and Claudia Colmer, bass. Later, Zena Smith joined as singer/guitarist, together with Roger Barnes, keyboards, and Tom Jackson, drums. Following Gerald’s sad death in 2012, Jacka Jazz continues as a quintet, playing on the Roseland and further afield. The drum slot is now filled by local musician Keith Marshall. The band plays tunes from the Great American songbook, plus familiar and lesser-known numbers by Duke Ellington and others, as well as Mike’s original compositions. Mike taught himself clarinet and saxes in the 1940s. In 1949 he co-founded Bristol’s Avon Cities, described by Humphrey Littleton as “one of the great British jazz bands.” In 1955 he took up the trombone, which he played until the Avon Cities disbanded in 2000, one of their last gigs being at Falmouth Poly.
Accompanying Mike will be Claudia on double bass, a professional musician since 1954. Zena is the youngest and as well as playing also teaches guitar and bass guitar. On piano is Roger who has accompanied Acker Bilk, Kenny Baker and others. Now retired to Cornwall he frequently plays with Jacka Jazz. Last but not least is Keith on drums and percussion, a musician with many years of experience.

The first time I worked with flowers, I just remember buckets and buckets of English garden roses and their insane intense colour and scent. The feeling an immersive design creates has always stayed with me and continues to inspire me.

St Just Gardens Tour
The sub-tropical grounds of St Just Church are described by John Betjeman as ‘’the most beautiful churchyard on earth’’.
Enjoy a walk through the beautiful churchyard and then look at the stunning interior of the 13th-century church. Clive Johns will be your guide and will show you many hidden treasures you may not have noticed before.
Miss V’s Cornish Tea Shop overlooks the gardens, so why not have a coffee before you set off or lunch after the walk.

You’re Worried About Your Memory… Workshop
The Roseland Festival is proud to host a pioneering event aimed at helping people worrying because they have noticed changes in their memory and cognitive abilities. Rather than seeing “dementia” as a chronic, untreatable, terminal illness, the approach focuses on the cognitive problems unique to each individual and how to develop calmer, more successful ways of dealing with them, both in terms of physical health and through psychological methods. The workshop seeks to make people aware of increasing cognitive difficulties, and they might be helped through their own efforts.
The participants should be experiencing some difficulties with their memory and cognitive processes which concern them. It is not aimed at interested bystanders. Participants should reckon on being able to follow the workshop’s three hours (with breaks!) and its novel ideas. There will be an opportunity to split up into small work groups. This is a “training” event and there will be no attempt to provide individual therapy.
We hope participants will leave with more optimism and with a framework and structure that allows them to handle their problems with more confidence.
The workshop is for people worried about their memories, so it is “for real”, not those who are only interested “intellectually”.
Workshop has five main components:
- Why the existing model is wrong, degrading and damaging.
- Clearing out your mindspace to maximise the ability to attend – working on traumas, bad relationships, grudges etc. that use up mindspace
- Maximising cardio-vascular health, so that your brain maximises its oxygen and nutrient supply
- Problem-solving approach: break down your “lousy memory” into tackleable problems
- Maximising your giving and taking support from important others to help with 2-4.
He will present the main ideas of the book at the workshop. He is very pleased to be joined by Professor Reg Morris, a specialist in helping persons who have had strokes. We will show how these ideas can be applied in everyday life to alleviate memory difficulties.
In Conversation With Author Wyl Menmuir
Join Wyl Menmuir, Man-Booker prize-nominated writer and Author of ‘Draw of the Sea’, for an ‘In Conversation With’ Daphne Skinnard, Assistant Editor of BBC Radio Cornwall.
NOVELIST, EDITOR & TEACHER OF WRITING
Wyl Menmuir is an award-winning author based in Cornwall. His 2016 debut novel, The Many was longlisted for the Man-Booker Award and was an Observer Best Fiction of the year pick. His second novel Fox Fires was published in 2021 and his short fiction has been published by Nightjar Press, Kneehigh Theatre and National Trust Books and appeared in Best British Short Stories. Wyl’s first full-length non-fiction book, The Draw of the Sea, won the Roger Deakin Award from the Society of Authors and is published in 2022. A former journalist, Wyl has written for Radio 4’s Open Book, The Guardian and The Observer, and the journal Elementum. He is co-creator of the Cornish writing centre, The Writers’ Block and lectures in creative writing at Falmouth University.
Born in Stockport in 1979, Wyl now lives on Cornwall’s north coast with his wife and two children. When he is not writing or teaching writing, Wyl enjoys messing around in boats.

The Countrymen
The Countrymen are a Cornish Folk Rock Harmony Group from Launceston.
Five seasoned musicians with tight four-part harmony vocals and a token Cornishman. With a relaxed and light-hearted presentation style they take the audience on a journey through the history and culture of Cornwall, featuring their own arrangements of traditional and contemporary songs, as well as original material. Interspersed with the occasional pop cover to lighten the mood when required, there is no mistaking that to a man, they love their county with a passion.
Now in their fifth year, they have been becoming increasingly popular across both Devon & Cornwall with appearances on both radio and TV and numerous festival appearances including The Falmouth International Sea Shanty Festival, The Rock Oyster Festival, Falmouth Week, Bridport Folk Festival, Little Orchard Festival and Looe Saves The Day.

Pendower Foraging Food Walk
Join our Cornish Wild Food foraging walk to get you confident harvesting and cooking with at least a dozen different tasty wild edibles, although we may find a lot more than that.
You will learn the principles of sustainable foraging, safe harvesting, useful tools and the laws on gathering wild food, and we’ll finish with a cook-up of some of our foraged finds.

Lesley Trotter – Cousin Jacks & Cockneys
Dr Lesley Trotter is a social historian, genealogist and writer with a special interest in combining family history and academic research techniques to reveal the hidden stories of the past.
Her PhD in Cornish Studies at the University of Exeter focused on the experiences of wives ‘left behind’ by emigrating Cornish miners in the 19th century and is now published as The Married Widows of Cornwall. Lesley is an Honorary Research Fellow of the Institute of Cornish Studies at the University of Exeter, Vice-Chair of the Cornwall Association of Local Historians, an Associate of the Association of Genealogists and Researchers in Archives, (AGRA) and also holds an Undergraduate Advanced Diploma in Local History from the University of Oxford. Lesley gives frequent talks on her research to academic and public audiences, works with arts groups on community history projects, and is a director of the St Day Old Church Community Interest Company.

Treasure Hunt by Kayak, Percuil River
The Percuil river is a beautiful part of the Roseland peninsula and provides a safe area for novice paddlers to try kayaking and explore the area on the water. The treasure hunt involves using a map to find clues set around the river to find the treasure.
Our sit on top kayaks are stable and easy to paddle and we will provide buoyancy aids and can hire you wetsuits if required. You will need to bring clothes and footwear that can get wet or a swimming costume if you’d like to hire a wetsuit. The double kayaks have three seats and are suitable for two adults and a small child.
Participants need to bring clothes and footwear that can get wet or wear swimwear. We can hire wetsuits if required.

Kit Hillbillies
Old-timey, good-timey bluegrass with rousing vocal harmonies that smuggle in more than a few wry local references.
Instrumental tasting notes: Banjo, fiddle, mandolin, guitar, double bass, percussion. Vigorous, expressive and irresistibly tappy on the toes, with a crisp rhythmic finish. Think Betty Stogs, rather than Harvey’s Bristol Cream.
Their music has been described as the sound of Woody Guthrie chasing Earl Scruggs in a stolen hay lorry.
A simpler summary came from the Guardian journalist Tim Dowling: “The Kit Hillbillies: Excellent. See them soon.”

Day 9 – Sunday 30 April
Explore the Fal Estuary by Boat
Once again, thanks to FalRiver, we can offer this unique opportunity to explore our Estuary and Rivers on board the Moyana. The commentary will point out the local sites, history and wildlife. It is a wonderful opportunity to see parts of the shoreline that are inaccessible by land. Wrap up warmly. Tea and coffee are available on the boat, and there are a number of enclosed seats in the cabin. The trip will last two hours. Hopefully, just back in time for the Curgurrel lunch.
Built in 1954, Moyana is a purpose-built boat for the river. She has been lovingly cared for over the years and had an extensive refurb in 2013 with a brand new bar, toilets, seating, tables and deck configuration.
Wrap up warmly. Tea and coffee are available on the boat, and there are a number of enclosed seats in the cabin.
NB Limited numbers available. Please book early to avoid disappointment.

Discovering, recording, conserving, and enhancing our special natural environment; covering the five parishes of the Roseland and incorporating Tregony.
Wild Roseland is organised by a group of volunteers who care passionately about looking after nature and helping others to appreciate the richness of our environment. Our objectives are to assess and monitor our natural landscape, flora and fauna, so that we can all better appreciate it. We endeavour to inspire local people and visitors, by highlighting the Roseland and its wealth of biodiversity, for all to know, respect, care for, and enjoy.
Our work often involves practical projects, with other like-minded organisations, to complement and enhance initiatives. Examples of some of these are the building of homes for nature for barn owls, garden birds, bats and hedgehogs. We are developing Wild Flower areas too, including a large meadow specifically for pollinating butterflies, moths, bees, and also other insects. Surveys have been organised collecting information on the status of otters and hedgehogs and breeding barn owls, as well as “ground truthing “surveys of the hedges, trees, and grasses of the Roseland. Our shoreline is studied too with annual surveys of seaweeds and seashore life.
All this, along with some joint recording by the National Trust, the Butterfly Conservation Group, the RSPB, the BTO, and the Cornwall Seal Group is enabling a bigger picture to emerge of the natural history of the Roseland. This is then collated through those organisations submissions, along with our own, to the Cornwall database, ERCCIS, (Environmental Records for Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly). This is particularly important as the Roseland has generally, with some exceptions, been under-recorded in the past.

Introduction to Bushcraft & Outdoor Skills – 7th Rise
We’re heading outdoors for an adventure at 7th Rise this year. Join us at their Fal riverside woodland venue and learn some outdoor skills and fire-starting challenges. Suitable for adults and children 8 yrs old and up. www.7thrise.co.uk
A fair level of fitness is required for this event as the venue is only accessed by foot for a 10-minute walk off-road. You will meet their team in their car park just off the road to the King Harry Ferry and walk down a farm track and into the nearby woodland.

Our address is Penperth Cottage, St Just-in-Roseland, Cornwall. However, we’re so tucked away that we don’t have our own postcode. The closest – our neighbours at Penperth Farm on the road to the King Harry Ferry – is TR2 5JH. We suggest skipping sat nav and instead follow the instructions below and take a look at the map to get your bearings. Once you’ve arrived at our meeting point, it’s then a 15-minute walk to the site – across fields and down a track.
Driving via St Just in Roseland
From the A30, follow signs for St Mawes. When you get to St Just-in-Roseland, turn right on to the B3289 following signs for the King Harry Ferry.
Continue along this road, past the sign for Roundhouse Barns until you see a lay-by on your right, next to a white sign saying: ‘Welcome to the Parish of St Just-in-Roseland’. Our car park entrance is opposite this sign. Turn left into the field and park on your right in the designated parking area. This is where we’ll meet you.

St Just Gardens Tour
The sub-tropical grounds of St Just Church are described by John Betjeman as ‘’the most beautiful churchyard on earth’’.
Enjoy a walk through the beautiful churchyard and then look at the stunning interior of the 13th-century church. Clive Johns will be your guide and will show you many hidden treasures you may not have noticed before.
Miss V’s Cornish Tea Shop overlooks the gardens, so why not have a coffee before you set off or lunch after the walk.

Morris-Begg Duo Guitar & Song
Described as delivering “energetic and charming performances”, the Morris-Begg Duo of Ross Morris (guitar) and Ines Mayhew-Begg (soprano) began working together in 2019 at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.
They have already brought their shared enjoyment of the intimate and expressive nature of voice and guitar to several prestigious venues across the UK including as Kings Place, the National Gallery of Scotland, St Giles Cathedral and the National Musuem of Scotland. They perform to a wide variety of audiences as Live Music Now Scotland Artists and International Guitar Foundation Young Artists. Next year they will be premiering new IGF commissions for voice and guitar. They aim to continue to bring a freshness to their programmes through their own unique arrangements and commissions.
Ross has performed across the UK as a soloist including at Helly’s International Guitar Festival and he toured with Glyndebourne Opera in 2021. He is a member of Quartet Malamatina who performed at the UN Climate Conference and will be touring the UK and Canada in 2023, premiering a new commission by Marco Galvani. He teaches guitar and musicianship at St Andrews University.
Ines is a Scottish soprano and has recently made her German Debut as Adele in Lyric Opera Studio Weimar’s production of Die Fledermaus. She has performed several solo roles for Scottish Opera Young Company and her performance as Amore received praise for having ‘confidence, consistency and fluency’ by Andrew Clark in Opera Magazine. She has a keen interest in early music and is the founder and director of the Avra Baroque Ensemble.

An Evening of Cornish Spirits
Experience the true spirit of Cornwall with the incredible taste of Rock Gin and our sensational rums.
Rock Gin is the result of our quest to uncover the true Spirit of Cornwall developed in our minds from many hours relaxing on Rock beach. Our gin is distilled by hand in small batches using pure spring water from our own deep water source combined with fragrant botanicals and fresh citrus fruits. At the heart of our craft gin is a team of artisans who meticulously test each and every batch before hand bottling, stamping and inspecting before being released for sale.
Now for the rum family, initially we made Cornish Spiced Rum with cinnamon, vanilla, orange peel, allspice and cubeb pepper resulting a spicy, peppery rum. Next we made White Espresso Cornish Rum, with the coffee being flown direct from our nephews’ farm in Kenya. After that came our Cornish Red Rum which is a light spiced rum enriched with plump red cherries. In 2021 we released three new rums, the first is an incredibly special Cornish Saffron Rum with extra cinnamon, resulting in a smooth, full bodied flavour that is totally unique. The second one of the year to be released is our Cornish Pineapple dark spiced rum which – no surprise- has a rich pineapple flavour. Finally we have made our Cornish Vanilla spiced rum, a light spiced rum heavy on the vanilla.
All Cornish Rock Gins are sugar free and made from the freshest and purest natural ingredients sourced from the best vendors, whether they are local or on the other side of the world. The Rock Distillery Rums, meanwhile are developed from sugar cane- as with all rums- but then distilled with the purest botanicals. Cornish Rock Gin and Rum is made by a team of local artisans in the picturesque and dramatic landscape of the Allen Valley

Willow Workshop – 10 am and repeated 2 pm
Learn the ancient art of willow weaving. In a half-day workshop, you will be able to master a simple form of weaving. Take home a plant support obelisk to support sweet peas or any small climbing plant.

A brand-new event concept for the festival and a unique dining experience!
Chef Rupert Cooper of Philleigh Way Cookery School and Jamie Hext of Roseland Market Garden, are teaming up to create a wonderful polytunnel pop-up feast, a superb evening showcasing the very best produce from the Roseland. Rupert will be creating a 4-course menu using a prized hogget and an abundance of fresh vegetables from the farm. Set on the brow of Carwarthen Farm, overlooking St Mawes Bay and the Carrick roads, guests will enjoy an alfresco dinner inside the candlelit polytunnel, with bar serving wine and beer.
Please follow directions to Carwarthen Farm, follow the lane downhill to the barn area where you will be assisted with parking. It is a farm, so farm-appropriate footwear is recommended!
