Grants 2019

As well as our regular annual grant to four local primary schools, we awarded a grant to the Roseland Academy in 2019 for their project, ‘Our World,  Our Planet’.   These are some images of the printmaking the students produced with visiting artist, Daisy Jones, on the project’s sustainable / environmental theme.   We received this report from their Expressive Arts Development Officer.

“Year 9 students from The Roseland Academy took photos of polluted beaches and inland areas in and around the Roseland peninsula, with a particular focus on plastics, some of which was shown in the Wild Roseland photography exhibition last April. Using these images as a starting point, they took part in several workshops with local printmaker and artist Daisy Jones and produced some stunning screen prints on this theme. These were displayed in Truro Cathedral last June as part of a secondary school art exhibition entitled ‘Our World, Our Planet’ as part of the Combined Truro Schools Art Exhibition, and were very well received by visitors to the cathedral over two weeks. Visitor comments included,

“Thank you for the courage to let us glimpse in your artwork the passions you have for the future of our fragile world.”

“Such creative artwork… beautiful and powerful in meaning”

All nine partner primary schools took part in a series of printmaking workshops with Daisy Jones which ran during the spring and summer terms, based here at The Roseland Academy to make us of our large working area, art equipment and printing press. Groups of Key Stage 2 pupils selected from Years 5 & 6 worked collaboratively to create screen prints on the theme of ‘Seas, Trees and Bees’ – linking to our environmental theme. Each primary school came up with a short phrase or sentence on their chosen theme and this formed the basis of a graphic print, which involved the creation of beautiful handmade graphic fonts and other graphic imagery to illustrate their ideas on the environmental challenges that lie ahead.
