15 Oct 2019 Roseland Festival Highlights
The 2019 Festival is now over. It was a splendid eleven days. The Committee would like to thank all those who performed, all the local businesses and venues which supported us, and most of all you for coming along.
We kicked off with Geoff Lakeman, described as ‘a stalwart of West Country Folk scene’ at the Tresanton Chapel in St Mawes. The beautiful acoustics of the chapel allowed Geoff to perform without a microphone, his smooth tenor voice filling the space and ears of the audience. The walks proved popular again this year culminating with the Bluebells and Birds walk with wildlife enthusiast David Hall. There were talks from writers Patrick Gale, Robert Goddard and Dan Sefton, artist Robin Mason, military historian Roderick de Norman, Conservation Ranger from the Seal Sanctuary Grace Jones and the Tate St Ives. The gin and vodka and wine talks and tasting events were both fun and informative.
Always popular, the Fal River Boat Trip, a guided tour of the history and wildlife of the Carrick Roads and the Fal River, informed and entertained guests on the two hour tour. A coach trip was organised to visit three Roseland churches to discover their architecture, parishes and people.
The films shown this year were Never Let Me Go, a B&W cold war classic romance film and the original film Jamaica Inn. Live music continued to entertain with Latin ensemble, Orpheus, The Tresillian Singers ladies’ choir and the Rhos Keur male choir bringing their voices together and the naturally talented Edwina Hayes. Closing the Festival were The Kit Hillbillies, playing rollicking bluegrass and good-time acoustic roots tunes.
